Dr. Stephen M.K. Brunswick
St. Andrew’s Celtic Press | The Celtic Press Journal

The Kingdoms Disappeared from the Maps. But Did Their Houses Disappear?

The history of the Celtic kingdoms is often told as a succession of endings.

A king dies. A dynasty is displaced. A kingdom is conquered. A clan is suppressed. An ancient ecclesiastical foundation passes into other hands.

The familiar historical narrative then moves forward to the institutions that replaced them.

But what became of the people whose names had been associated with those kingdoms for centuries?

What became of their descendants, their hereditary traditions, their arms, their ecclesiastical foundations, and their historical records?

These questions are at the heart of our forthcoming publication, Restoration of the Celtic Monarchy: What Is Actually Being Restored?

It is also the historical investigation behind our growing Celtic Restoration project at St. Andrew’s Celtic Press.

The central proposition is straightforward:

The disappearance of a kingdom from the political map does not necessarily mean the disappearance of every institution, family, tradition, or historical identity associated with it.

Indeed, the subsequent history of Britain, Ireland, and Scotland provides many opportunities to investigate precisely what survived.

The Gaelic Dynastic World

Before the consolidation of modern states, the Gaelic world contained an intricate landscape of kingdoms, lordships, territories, and hereditary communities.

The Irish High Kings and provincial dynasties belonged to a political world in which genealogical identity, kinship, ecclesiastical patronage, and territorial authority were closely intertwined.

Scotland developed its own complex history of kingship, regional lordship, and chiefly authority.

The histories of the O’Neills, O’Donnells, MacGregors, MacNeils, and other families cannot be understood merely by looking at the boundaries of present-day countries.

Their histories involve migration, marriage, exile, territorial change, competing genealogies, and the preservation of family traditions across generations.

Our book will investigate these histories together, rather than treating Irish and Scottish genealogical traditions as entirely separate subjects.

The Flight of the Earls and the Survival of the Houses

One of the defining episodes in the decline of the Gaelic political order was the Flight of the Earls in 1607.

The departure of Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O’Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnell, became a major turning point in Irish history.

Yet exile presents an important historical distinction.

A family may lose its territorial position while descendants, genealogical records, family associations, and historical claims continue elsewhere.

The history of displaced houses therefore extends beyond the history of the territories they once governed.

It becomes a history of families, archives, memory, and institutions that may survive across borders.

This is one of the principal subjects of our forthcoming book.

The Scottish Clans: More Than a Name

The Scottish clan system provides another important field of investigation.

A clan was not merely a surname shared by unrelated individuals. Historically, clans could encompass extended kinship, territorial associations, followers, chiefly leadership, and relationships of mutual obligation.

The history of Clan Gregor illustrates the importance of distinguishing the suppression of a name or political position from the continued existence of the people associated with it.

The same broader question can be asked of numerous other families and communities.

What survived?

What was restored?

What was transformed?

And what exists today primarily as historical, genealogical, heraldic, or cultural continuity?

These questions deserve documentary investigation rather than assumptions in either direction.

Heraldry and the Historical Record

One of the most visible surviving elements of the old houses is heraldry.

Coats of arms, crests, badges, seals, and family mottos preserve important evidence concerning identity and historical associations.

But heraldry also requires precision.

A personal coat of arms is not necessarily the property of everyone who shares a surname. A clan chiefship, a hereditary title, and a claim to former territorial sovereignty are distinct subjects.

Our investigation will examine the role of heraldic authorities, historical registers, chiefly recognition, and documentary succession in preserving aspects of the old order.

The objective is to understand what the records establish, what remains disputed, and where further research is necessary.

The Forgotten Ecclesiastical Foundations

There is another dimension to Celtic Restoration that must not be overlooked.

The ancient British and Celtic Church.

Long before many of the familiar medieval political institutions emerged, Christian communities flourished across Britain and Ireland.

Their bishops, missionaries, saints, monastic foundations, and local ecclesiastical traditions formed an important part of the historical landscape.

These communities were frequently associated with royal and noble patrons, local families, and hereditary institutions.

Our wider research into the Culdees, ancient Celtic Christian foundations, and the saints of Britain and Ireland therefore belongs within the same historical investigation.

This is also why St. Andrew’s Celtic Press has recently introduced 1,000 British & Celtic Saints Before Augustine, beginning a developing reference series on the early saints.

The restoration of historical knowledge cannot be confined to castles, crowns, and heraldic shields.

It must also recover the churches, manuscripts, religious communities, and spiritual traditions that helped shape these societies.

What Does Restoration Mean Today?

The word restoration can mean several different things.

It may refer to the recovery of historical records.

It may concern the reconstruction of a genealogy.

It may involve the preservation of a language, a clan association, a heraldic tradition, or an ecclesiastical inheritance.

It may also concern historical claims associated with displaced dynasties and former kingdoms.

These meanings must be distinguished.

The historical continuity of a family, for example, does not by itself establish a present-day entitlement to govern a territory.

Nevertheless, the study of hereditary institutions, dynastic claims, and historical rights remains a legitimate field of historical inquiry.

Our forthcoming book will examine these questions through the records of the Irish and Scottish houses, the history of the Gaelic order, the heraldic institutions, and the wider documentary evidence.

It will also consider the Brunswick, MacGregor, MacNeil, and O’Neill connections that have formed part of our ongoing research.

<h2 dir="auto" data-section-id="1s0w9kw" data-start="14883"
